Q&A with John Conway
Q: When did you start your career in Massage Therapy?
A: I began working in 1980.
Q: Why did you decide to become a Massage Therapist?
A: I was nearing the end of building houses, due to a low back problem and a sense that I had gotten about all of the value I could out of that line of work.
The experiences and thoughts I had when receiving massage therapy, and the results of those experiences, made me want to facilitate others having those experiences.
Q: What training and experience do you have in Massage Therapy?
A: I have never had an extensive formal curriculum. When I began working in Texas there were no schools here. But I did have the equivalent of probably a good 300 hour training at that time. In 1985, when David Lauterstein moved to Austin, I added valuable learning from him in anatomy and deep massage, then studied with numerous instructors nationally over the next15 years, focusing mainly on Sports Massage, with Bob King, Bennie Vaughn and Rich Phaigh. I also had valuable experiences learning from Leon Chaitow, Michael Shea, and Ben Benjamin.
Q: What was your favorite aspect of Massage School?
A: My favorite aspect of my version of massage school (itinerant learning) was the people I met and the deepening of my understanding about the Bodymind.
Q: Do you have a favorite modality? If so, what is it?
A: Nothing better to me that solid Swedish!
Q: What is your approach to Massage Therapy?
A: Get a clear history and assessment before proceeding, find out what the client wants, get a lot of feedback during and after each session.
Q: What is your favorite color?
A: Blue.
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Mex.
Q: What kind of movies do you like?
A: Old fashioned mystery/thrillers. Low-to-no special effects.
Q: Why do you think Massage Therapy is important?
A: It grounds humans in a way that nothing else does. Helps us be humane and remember what is important, Helps us to know ourselves.
