Reflections of a Middle-aged Student
By Kristina Deasey, March 2010 500-hour Professional Massage Training Student
As I get older, I’m learning more and more the signs of when I’m doing too much: tired and achy, can’t seem to get good sleep or even enough sleep (even though my body and brain are worn out), feeling like I’m going in too many directions at once and can’t quite get a handle on things.
In the last two weeks I had my third Swedish Massage Practical Exam, my second big written exam, I work at Austin Community College and school started (the beginning of the semester is always stressful), my second PTS (which was hard but very good) and a couple of other personal things that added up to lots of stress, worry and a bit of anxiety.
This week we are on break from massage school. For me it was a much needed break, time to let my brain slow down a bit and have a few days of doing nothing. With working full-time and going to school three nights a week, it’s not easy keeping all the balls in the air, so to speak. It can be a real challenge.
I made the conscious decision to not do any outside massages while on break nor will I crack open any of the massage books. This week is all about fun and relaxation. I’m reading a couple of fiction books, playing poker online in a women’s league and just generally taking it easy. My hope is that I will have renewed energy for when we return to school next week. I’m confident that I will.
After all, TLCschool is a positive place to be, the massage therapy instructors are all wonderful, and I’m enjoying learning about all the different aspects of massage.
So, I’m off the grid for a few days. I’ll enjoy the break, do some things I haven’t had time to do lately, perhaps see or at least connect with some old friends I haven’t had time for and take it easy. To my fellow students, I hope you are enjoying your time off as well and I’ll see all of you next week!
Lauterstein-Conway Massage School has many “working students” who, for the love of massage and desire for a rewarding career, work through massage school.
Interested in massage school, but know you’ll have to work while you attend?
You can do it!
