by Kate Jordan, developer of Bodywork for the Childbearing Year

I’m told over and over by my pregnant clients that they’ve never had a pregnancy massage like this-one that was comfortable, relaxing, but that also effectively addressed the unique concerns of pregnancy, whether it was back pain, leg cramps, or the best sleeping position. While many massage curricula may introduce the subject of pregnancy, most classes are quite limited in scope, and tend to echo, sometimes inaccurately, the positioning guidelines, and caveats for a safe pregnancy massage that I developed for Bodywork for the Childbearing Year.

In this intensive certification program, participants have the opportunity to learn to use the most effective techniques to address a wide variety of pregnancy issues, including muscle energy technique, strain counterstrain , myofascial release, and connective tissue massage. We move through the three trimesters of pregnancy with appropriate modifications, and learn to help our pregnant clients prepare for labor with safe exercise and self care.

Current labor and delivery trends in the US are described and participants learn and practice the most useful hands-on strategies for labor support, which can be taught to family members, or used by certified therapists with clients in labor.

We examine the most neglected part of pregnancy: post-partum, and learn safe and evidencebased postpartum bodywork, including post surgical guidelines, and scar massage.

One of the hallmarks of the Bodywork for the Childbearing Year training is its focus on the therapist’s experience, with emphasis on her working biomechanics through continual feedback on posture using the Alexander Technique, as well as instructor feedback during hands-on sessions, and the opportunity to practice the skills learned during a practicum session with a pregnant volunteer.

Graduates of Bodywork for the Childbearing Year not only feel confident and competent to work on pregnant clients, but also leave the class with new skills and techniques to use with ALL their clients (and an illustrated 125 page handbook for future reference).
